  1. Store Propane Tanks Outdoors:
    • Never store propane tanks indoors. This includes propane equipment not certified for indoor use such as generators, grills, cookers, and fryers.
  2. Develop and Review an Emergency Plan:
    • Create an emergency plan and review it regularly with your family. This plan should include instructions for turning off your propane tank and indoor propane appliances.
  3. Prepare a Disaster Supply Kit:
    • Ensure you have a disaster supply kit that includes clean water, non-perishable food, extra clothing and blankets, flashlights/batteries, and a battery-powered radio.
  4. Maintain Propane Supply:
    • Keep an adequate supply of propane in your tank. During and after a hurricane, propane and other types of fuel may not be readily available, and roads leading to your home might not be accessible for delivery.

  5. Secure Outdoor Items:
    • Secure outdoor furniture, tools, and appliances. Trim trees and clean gutters to minimize potential hazards.

    • Listen to your local authorities for instructions on the appropriate course of action to take regarding evacuations. Evacuate the area when necessary.

In Case of Evacuation:

  • Turn off the gas supply valve in a clockwise direction at the tank.
  • Turn off the appliance pilot lights, control valves, and manual shut-off valves.
  • Properly secure propane tanks, if safe to do so.
  • NEVER store propane tanks inside your home.
  • NEVER use outdoor propane appliances or generators indoors or in an enclosed space.

Contact Your Propane Service Provider If:

  • You smell propane gas.
  • The propane tank has shifted or moved.
  • The tank regulator was exposed to water.
  • The gas lines have pulled away from the tank or if the lines are damaged, bent, or broken.
  • Propane appliances or controls were exposed to water.
