Fire Up the Grill Safely This 4th of July
The Fourth of July is one of the most popular grilling days of the year. Whether you’re cooking burgers, hot dogs, or your favorite barbecue recipes, taking a few simple precautions can help keep your celebration safe and enjoyable.
1. Store Propane Cylinders Properly
Always store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright position and away from heat sources. Never store cylinders indoors or near the grill when not in use.
2. Choose a Safe Location
Always place your grill outdoors on a level surface and at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, overhanging branches, and other combustible materials.
3. Check for Leaks
Before grilling, inspect hoses and connections. Use a 50/50 mixture of liquid soap and water to check for leaks. If bubbles form, turn off the gas and address the issue before using the grill.
4. Keep the Lid Open When Lighting
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep the grill lid open while lighting. If the grill doesn’t ignite, turn off the gas and wait at least 15 minutes before trying again.
5. Never Leave the Grill Unattended
Stay near your grill while cooking and keep children and pets a safe distance away. Monitoring your grill can help prevent flare-ups and other hazards.
6. Keep Your Grill Clean
Regularly remove grease and food buildup from grates, burners, and drip pans. A clean grill performs better and helps reduce the risk of grease fires.
7. Shut It Down Correctly
When you’re finished cooking, turn off the burner controls and close the propane cylinder valve completely. Allow the grill to cool before covering or storing it.
A little preparation goes a long way toward creating a safe and memorable holiday. From all of us at Blossman Gas, have a safe, happy, and delicious Fourth of July!
