Grill Safe This Independence Day

The Fourth of July is the perfect time to fire up the grill, gather with friends and family, and enjoy great food under the fireworks. While you’re celebrating and with good company, don’t forget to put safety first. Before you get cooking, check out these essential Independence Day grilling safety tips:

1. Read the Manufacturer’s Instructions

Before you do anything, give the manufacturer’s instructions a quick review. It covers everything from storage and cleaning to safe ignition. For example, always keep the lid open when lighting your grill and don’t close it until you’re sure it’s properly lit.

2. Set Up In a Safe Spot

Grills should be kept outdoors and at least five feet away from any buildings or structures. Choose a flat surface clear of outdoor furniture, decorations, overhanging trees, or anything flammable. Make sure your setup isn’t a fire hazard.

3. Check For Leaks

Before hooking up your propane cylinder, do a quick leak test using a 50/50 mix of liquid soap and water on the hose and connections. If you see bubbles forming, you’ve got a leak. Test every time you replace the tank, it only takes a minute and can prevent an accident.

4. Light Safely

Always follow the grill’s lighting instructions. Keep the lid open when igniting, and if the flame goes out, turn everything off and wait at least 15 minutes before trying again. That time allows any lingering gas to dissipate safely.

5. Never Leave the Grill Unattended

Someone should always be watching the grill. Accidents can happen in seconds. Stay close to keep grilling safe.

6. Shut It Down Right Away

When the cooking is done and the sparklers are fading, be sure to turn off the burner controls and completely close the propane cylinder valve. Taking that extra step helps ensure everyone stays safe long after the party ends.

From all of us at Blossman Gas, have a happy, and safe, Fourth of July!
