How to Read Your Propane Tank Gauge

With cold weather approaching, it’s important to understand how to read the gauge on your propane tank to help keep your family safe, warm, and comfortable throughout the winter. The gauge shows approximately how much propane remains in your tank. Just as you monitor the fuel level in your vehicle, regularly checking your propane tank helps ensure you don’t run out when you need it most.

To check your propane level, open the lid on your tank to locate the gauge. The numbers represent the percentage of propane remaining. Due to a critical safety measure accounting for pressure changes of liquid propane, a reading of 80% indicates a full propane tank. This means a reading of 40% indicates the tank is about halfway full. When the gauge drops below 30%, it’s time to request a delivery.

If your tank runs out of propane, a qualified professional must inspect the system before the service can be restored. Someone over the age of 18 must be home during this inspection, and if you are not enrolled in our Worry Free Delivery program, a fee will be charged for this visit.

Propane powers many essential cold-weather needs, including home heating, water heating, cooking, clothes drying, fireplaces, backup power, and even outdoor living features. Monitoring your tank gauge helps ensure you have enough propane to meet these demands, especially during winter storms.
