Perfect Sears on Steaks

  • After your steak has cooked on the grill at 450-500 degrees for 2-3 minutes, flip your steaks to a new area on the cooking grate. They’ve already absorbed the heat from the area of the cooking grate that were placed on first. Placing the steak somewhere new ensures that the cooking grate is still hot enough to create those beautiful sear marks.

Picture Perfect Burgers

  • Burgers can puff up in the middle as they cook, making the tops rounded and awkward for piling on the toppings. To avoid this, press an indentation into the top of each raw patty with your thumb or the back of a spoon. (It’ll help keep them from shrinking too). When the center pushes up, the top of each burger will be relatively level.

Safely Extinguish Flare-Ups

  • If your flame has gotten too big and has the potential to get out of your control, here are the steps to keep in mind. Turn off your burners if you are using a gas grill. Only do this if you can safely reach the knobs. Smother the fire, do not pour or spray water onto the grill. Doing so will spread the burning grease to a greater area. Close the lid and shut all vents to help cut off oxygen to the fire. If the fire hasn’t calmed down after about 30 seconds, use a fire extinguisher to douse your grill
