Tackling Home Improvement Projects this Winter? Fuel- Efficient Water Heaters Can Save You a Bundle

Has your water heater reached the end of its intended use? Do you have a water heater to add to your winter home improvement project list? If so, making choices on a new hot water heater that can save energy, water and cost is the smart way to go. It’s a good idea to know the different types of water heaters available before you purchase one on your home improvement list:

Water heaters come in all types and sizes. There is propane, natural gas, oil, electric, tankless and solar models. They all vary in terms of first cost and operating costs. A propane tankless water heater conserves energy and increases efficiency to reduce a family’s energy cost by approximately 30%.

No matter what type you have, some things will remain pretty typical in terms of how you can reduce your expenses in operating the water heater. Let's take a look at some money and energy saving tips.

o The easiest way to reduce your hot water expense is to use less hot water.

o Sometimes a leaky faucet can waste water, other times an old shower head is the culprit.

o Leaking Water Heater. If your water heater is leaking it needs to be replaced. You're not going to fix it.

o Insulated Water Pipes. Well insulated hot water pipes can raise the effective hot water temperature at your shower head or faucet by 2°F to 4°F over the same water heater setting if the pipes were not insulated.

Compare fuel costs and water heater types If you have more than one fuel type available in your area, it's a good idea to compare fuel costs, especially if you're changing systems or appliances in your home improvement project. Even when replacing a hot water heater, you may find that you'll save more money in the long run if you use a different fuel or energy source. http://energy.gov/energysaver/articles/selecting-new-water-heater
